I went to Davidson, majored in Religion, but spent most of my time playing clarinet in the Charlotte area. After that I went to Baltimore and studied a few years at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore. Joined the Army Field Band in 1976, played there unhappily for 3 years. After that I went back for a Masters in Music at UNC-CH, then to Germany to study for two years on a Fulbright Grant. Was able to make a living here playing as a soloist and chamber musician, and I got a good teaching job, so I stayed here in Germany. Have been able to travel a lot in the world for concerts. Am retired from teaching now, but play regularly, sometimes in the US and NC!
I am an avid biker (road bike) and ride thousands of miles every year, for a while as a hobby I was a tour guide for the city where I live, because I fell in love with the history and stories of this old (really old) place.

School Story

My memories of High School are mixed, a few memories are good and many lie somewhere between embarassment and shame.... I look back with some amusement and tolerance on the way I was then: a young aimless kid caught between the throes of puberty and too much religion with a good dose of racism thrown in. I mostly remember that Sanderson had a few brave black students and many, including my father, who thought this to be the end of civilization as we knew it. It was bad enough for him and many other Raleighites that the Yankees had invaded us again and had moved into the aptly named „North Hills“
No need regretting what stages one goes through in life, but it‘s good to admit mistakes and try not to repeat them!
I have been living and working now in Germany for 40 years, feel more at home in Europe than I do in the US. I do miss some things from the States, but most of them are gone anyway, so I feel at home here in Germany.

Ellen Bohannan always thought I was funny, until she asked me to MC a talent show at Sanderson. It was embarrassing proof that I was not so funny after all.
