William "Bill" Lewis Gillett died in a two car accident on U.S. 1 south of Henderson NC on Saturday, January 31, 1970. Also killed in the accident were Bill's father, Lewis Gillett, and his mother Dona Gillett. Six people in the second vehicle involved were also killed.

Oher than grandfathers and JFK, Bill was the first person I knew who died. I remember my Mother coming the North Hill Drug Store where I worked, taking me aside and telling telling me gently. Bill and I were friends.

To this day, I feel the sadness and trauma of this loss. I sat next to Bill in English class. A great guy.
