Mark Silver

Obituary published in The News & Observer on Mar. 6, 2005.

Mr. Mark Abraham Silver, 52, died Saturday, February 26, 2005.

Mr. Silver was born and raised in Richmond, VA. He graduated from the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill, obtaining Masters Degrees in both Public Administration and Social Work. Mr. Silver was employed by Fresenius Medical Care, working as a Renal Social Worker with Raleigh Dialysis. Mr. Silver was a spirited member of the contra dance community through the local Triangle Country Dancers. He was a member of the Eno River Unitarian- Universalist Fellowship, and also was affiliated with the Chapel Hill Kehillah.

Mark was an extraordinary friend, the heart center of his family, a deeply caring social worker, and the most loving, thoughtful, and affectionate husband imaginable. He had a profound and vocal commitment to seeking peace and justice, especially in the United States and the Middle East. Mark dedicated much of his personal and professional life to alleviating the suffering of people in severe physical, emotional, or social pain, both by being a compassionate listener and personal advocate, and by working for social change. He generously supported many causes, including political organizations, charities, and music. Mark embodied a rich mixture of humor, wisdom, passion, steadfastness, and capacity for growth and change. He was a superb and energetic dancer and dance teacher, and an inspired leader of Passover seders. He was sweet (with a silly streak), had a huge heart, and was indescribably cute.

Mr. Silver is survived by his wife, Margaret "Peg" Lewis of the home; brother and sister-in-law, David Silver and Teresa Miller and their children, Jessie M. Silver and Gabe M. Silver, all of Charlottesville, VA; sisters and brother-in-law, Carol Silver of Atlanta, GA, and Leona Aiken and her husband, Stephen West of Tempe, AZ; father- and mother-in- law, Marc and Anne Lewis of Potomac, MD; brother-in-law, Michael Lewis, his wife, Jill Roberts-Lewis, and their children, Chris and Colleen Lewis, all of West Chester, PA; sister-in-law, Marcia Lewis of Rockville, MD; several aunts, uncles, cousins, and many friends. He was loved and is missed by all.

Mark Silver was indeed a great man with a huge heart. I was delighted to reconnect with him as a fellow member of Eno River Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Durham, where many of us still miss and speak of him, his dedication and contributions to social justice, and his sly sense of humor. He left us too soon.
